Context

The area of Tambacounda, which has high rates of malnutrition and poverty (62% compared to 46% nationally), faces increasing constraints (climate, pressure on land, access to water, dwindling forest resources) that worry the population. The Yakar Niari Wouli Farmers' Federation, aware of the issues and traditionally committed to organic farming and agroecology, seeks to strengthen development opportunities for its members. After an experiment with certified organic cotton in the years 2000-2010, the federation now wants to revive its activity by structuring its groups to develop local production and processing, especially of fonio, which is a traditional local foodstuff.

Purpose

Develop sources of income for farmers in the area, especially women, by increasing the federation's production, collection and processing capacity.

Why OVO believes in this project

By investing in the processing of locally produced fonio, this project ensures the emancipation of 400 women by 2026. The goal is to increase their income by 20% by then.

Social impact

Direct: 400 people have access to procurement, purchasing and training services. Indirect: 2,000 people enjoy income from processing.
