Context

Afforestation in Benin has decreased by 60% since 2013, while urbanization increased by 241% since 1975. Moreover, the country is not spared the effects of climate change: extreme droughts and floods are becoming more frequent, putting pressure on freshwater resources and ecosystems*.

Purpose

Join For Water aims to build community resilience to the impacts of these changes by supporting sustainable and equitable access to water and water-related ecosystem services (e.g. irrigation). In doing so, the protection and conservation of freshwater ecosystems goes hand in hand with the improvement and enhancement of ecosystem services (access to drinking water, water for agriculture).

Why OVO believes in this project

This project is committed to two tracks: fair access to drinking water on the one hand and the protection and preservation of freshwater ecosystems on the other.

Social impact

A total of 160 ha of freshwater ecosystems will be protected, giving 45,496 people better access to ecosystem services. The total population of the operating area (218,481 people) will be indirectly involved through improved water management and a healthy environment.
